Organizing Hacks To Make Your Home More Functional

For some, the prospect of spending a day organizing your home feels like a treat — a welcomed chance to focus on the oh-so-satisfying art of living in an orderly, uncluttered, and highly functional home. For others, the very notion of getting organized feels daunting — like fighting an uphill battle, with no obvious place to start, and tons of feelings involved.

No matter which category you fit into, in this post you’ll find brilliant organizing hacks that will help you keep your space organized without breaking the bank. Tested in my own home and used frequently in projects with many households in the last 2 years. I know these work and are effective for long-lasting functional spaces.

Before we get to the hacks, as always I recommend a good old-fashioned declutter session. Don’t complicate it, just decide if you love it or use it (or both) if not consider why you’re keeping it around.

From there, you’ll have less stuff around to hinder the process of creating lasting solutions for a chaos-free home. Organize using tools you already have at home, and supplement with affordable organizing products that will take your strategy to the next level.

Now let’s get to my favourite organizing hacks:

Get containers for inside your drawer

If you buy any organizing product it should be a drawer organizer, its so easy for drawers to become overwhelming with stuff. From junk drawers to the bathroom, your dresser, and your home office. These will make it easy to keep your things in the right place all the time.

The best news? You can use what you have around the house, old boxes, cardboard you can make anything work to keep your drawers organized!

Double-sided tape/ Museum gel

One of my favorite hacks for keeping those drawer organizers or boxes in place is double-sided tape or museum gel. Place a little on each corner of the organizer and they’ll stay in place, no matter how much you shuffle the drawer.

Remove Games and Puzzles from their boxes

To save space, take your board games and puzzles out of the boxes and use zippered bags instead. Use a basket to keep them together

Black labels and a chalk pen for expiry dates on canisters

Keep track of the expiration dates of your decanted items by using small black labels and a chalk pen. The best part, the pen can be wiped off when you refill the canister.

Use your vertical space with command hooks for hair tools and kitchen tools

Command hooks are a major game-changer for your under-the-sink spaces. You can hang rags, hair tools, extra tools for your Kitchen Aid. They are inexpensive, can be moved, and will get things off the bottom, you can’t ask for anything more.

A catch-all basket for the stairs

If you live in a multi-level house you know how many times a day you have to run up and down the stairs, so by adding a basket to the top or the bottom of the stairs, you can throw things that have to go up or down in there and take it all down when you’re ready.

Create Custom Labels

I love labels to help keep things organized, even more, I love a label with a picture for young kids. My favourite label maker hack is to download the images you want to use to your phone and put them into the brother app and then the image will print through your label maker.

Bonus tip:

Don’t put it down put it away

The best way to stay organized is to change your habits. Once your things have a home make sure they end up back in the right place instead of putting them down and having to move them later.

Happy Organizing!
