5 Easy Organizing Projects to Tackle this Spring

Spring has arrived and with warmer days comes an opportunity to give our homes a refresh. This year I figured I’d keep spring organizing pretty simple, with the 5 spaces that you should tackle seasonally. It will make your home feel fresh without feeling completely overwhelming.

Closets

Go through your closet every season to see what you’re really wearing and what you need. Questions to ask yourself while going through your wardrobe are: Does it fit? Is it comfortable? Do I wear it? Does it suit my lifestyle? If you answer no to one of these questions you can happily let it go. Focus on the items you feel really good wearing and actually use rather than the ones you are letting go.

For anything that you want to keep but aren’t currently wearing I recommend storing those items either at the back of your closet or in a bin in storage so they’re not taking up too much valuable space.

Entryway

The spring is always tricky for the entryway in Canada. One day it's -10 and the next it's 12, and the following it’s raining all day so you kind of need every option and when you add multiple kids to the mix it's easy for it to get a little chaotic. The first thing to do is get rid of anything that doesn’t fit or that the kids won’t wear. We all have that one pair of mitts that you bought but the kids refuse to wear, Let them go! Reduce as much as possible. Try to keep it to 3 pairs of shoes per person, rain boot, winter boot and a sneaker should cover all of the needs in the spring, start putting some of the heavier stuff away and focus on layering for the chilly mornings.

Bathroom

The bathroom is a small but mighty space that often holds a lot of stuff. This spring start by emptying the drawers and cabinets and wiping everything clean. Look for any expired products and add drawer organizers if you don’t already have them to give everything a specific home. Utilize the vertical space under the sink for extra storage.

Kids spaces

Children's toys, books, games, and art supplies can quickly accumulate to overwhelming levels, so it's important to declutter and reorganize kids' bedrooms and playrooms twice a year. "Especially when they're young, your kids' development is happening at such a fast pace. What they played with 6 months ago may not be of interest now. Invite kids to participate in the organizing process and help determine what to keep. This allows them to take ownership over their space and makes them more apt to keep things tidy over time.

Group similar toys and Add labels (with pictures for young kids) to baskets so it’s easy for kids to find what they are looking for and easy for them to put it all away after.

Pantry/ Food Cupboards

Spring is a great time to check expiration dates on canned goods and spices. Empty your pantry shelves and toss any items that have expired, pay special attention to seasonal items, like pumpkin. After wiping your pantry clean, arrange items into categories, such as breakfast items, dinner prep, or snack foods. Use bins or baskets to keep items contained and designate a spot for everything.
