Transition Your Summer Wardrobe to Fall in 3 Easy Steps

Happy First Day of Fall!

Yes, you read that correctly. Today marks the first official day of fall. As sad as it is to see the long endless days of summer sunshine fade away, there is something about the fall that gets me excited. Whether it's the Pumpkin Spice Lattes returning to Starbucks or the new fall fashion trends, there is plenty to look forward to in autumn!

As the weather gets cooler, the sleeves get longer, the boots get taller and the layers come out. So say goodbye (for now) to the tank tops, sundresses and swimsuits as they will be entering hibernation until the spring. Fall is the perfect season to take the time to store your summer items and prepare your closet for your colder weather clothes. In this blog post you will find simple and effective ways you can transition your closet from summer to fall.

Step 1: Edit The Summer Wardrobe

Before we even think about storing our summer clothes, we first need to edit our wardrobe to make room for our fall/winter items or new clothes. With all of your summer outfits still fresh in mind, now is the perfect time to go through all of your summer items and donate or sell the items you didn't wear, don't fit you anymore, or are just not in style.

Categories to group closet items:

  1. Store: love it, but only wear in spring and summer months

  2. Donate or Sell: don’t love it or wear it

  3. Repair: needs to be dry-cleaned, repaired, etc.

Step 2: Summer Clothes Storage Solutions

Now that we have an edited version of our summer wardrobe, it's time to find storage solutions. Depending on your own space, this can be in another closet, on a rack, in a Rubbermaid container in the basement, or under your bed.

If you have the space to keep your summer clothing in your main closet, fantastic! I just recommend moving them to the far corners, or the highest shelves, so that your prime real estate is reserved for the clothes you'll be wearing the most.

Step 3: Make Room For Fall

With our summer clothes out of the way, it's now time to organize our fall/ winter closet. My recommendation here is to first sort through all of the fall and winter items you've taken out of storage to decide what you want to keep or donate for the upcoming season. While doing so, group your clothes by style (Tops, Pants, Sweaters, Dresses, etc) then go through each pile, one item at a time. Just like we did with our summer wardrobe, create piles to donate, sell, tailor or toss.

Now it's time to put it all back together

I personally love to organize my closet by item and colour. For example, I'll hang all of my T-shirts together, my long sleeves together, and my sweaters together, then arrange it all in a rainbow order. Another option is to arrange your clothes from light to dark.

Pro tip: Make sure you include room for all the fall accessories such as hats, scarves, and longer coats. For scarves and hats, I like to either hang them on command hooks on the inside of my closet door or place them in clear bins on easy to reach shelves.

There you have it! In just three simple steps, you can seamlessly transition your summer wardrobe to a fall/ winter one.

Happy Organizing,

Nikki
